With the theme, “ Strengthening Roots and Spreading Wings in Endocrine Practice,” this Joint AACE-AACE Philippine Chapter Meeting promises to be a great opportunity for health care professionals to learn about and share ideas on the advances in the diagnosis and management of various endocrine disorders such as diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, osteoporosis, obesity, neuroendocrine tumors, reproductive problems, as well as nutrition-related topics and a short course on the basics of bone densitometry.
The Bone Densitometry Workshop is headed by Dr. Steven Petak, past President of AACE (2006-2007), a leading expert in Osteoporosis and Bone Metabolism.
Dr. Steven M. Petak, MD, JD, FACE, FCLM is the Immediate Past President of the American College of Endocrinology; Associate, Texas Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Endocrinology; and Director of the Bone Densitometry Unit and Osteoporosis Center. He is the Immediate Past President of the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) serving from 2006-2007 as President. Dr. Petak serves on the faculty for the International Society for Bone Densitometry Certification Course; President of the Houston Endocrine Society of the Harris County Medical Society; Bone Densitometry and Endocrine Consultant to NASA – Johnson Space Center, Houston Texas; Member, JCAHO Osteoporosis Management Technical Advisory Panel (2006-2007); Member,, Advisory Panel “Clinical Endocrinology News” (2006-2007); and Attorney at Law, licensed in Texas, May 1997 to present. He has previously served as the Chair for the Osteoporosis Advisory Committee with the Texas Department of Health (1996-2000 and is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
Dr. Augusto D. Litonjua, FPCP, FPSEM, FACE. The father of Philippine Endocrinology, he is the President Emeritus of AACE Philippine Chapter. He has founded many societies, received numerous awards, given thousands of lectures, and mentored hundreds of doctors and medical students, all of whom look up to him as an icon and a role model.
His recent awards from AACE include the Outstanding Service Award for the Promotion of Endocrine Health of an Underserved Population – given in April 2007 in Seattle, Washington.
In the recent AACE 2011 meeting in San Diego, he was the recipient of the International Clinician Award.
On August 19, 2011 Dr. Litonjua will deliver a plenary lecture on “Fatty Liver Update”
Dr. Adi Mehta is a renowned Endocrinologist from The Cleveland Clinic. He is a member of numerous societies in both the USA and Canada including the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Endocrine Society and the American Diabetes Association. He is listed in "Best Doctors in America: 2003-2004 and 2005-2006. He was awarded the Outstanding Clinical Endocrinologist Award for the year 2009 by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
His extensive research career includes over 160 scientific presentations and over 200 publications mostly in peer-reviewed journals. His scientific interests include studies in diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases and reproductive physiology and medicine. For this AACE – PC meeting , Dr. Mehta will discuss Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Controversies in the Blockade of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System.
S. Sethu K. Reddy, MD, is chairman and program director of the department of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Reddy's areas of medical interest are the epidemiology of diabetes and its complications, and clinical endocrinology (particularly obesity and thyroid disorders). In addition, he serves as adjunct associate professor in the department of medicine at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada.
He has written or co-authored more than 60 articles and book chapters on various aspects of endocrinology and has prepared abstracts of more than 40 research projects. Reddy is also an associate editor of the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine and has lectured extensively on the management of diabetes and its complications, as well as heart disease, obesity, thyroid disease, and other topics.
On August 18, Dr. Reddy will speak on Cardiorenal Issues in the Management of Diabetes.
Dr. Ricardo E. Fernando is an icon in the field of Diabetes in the Philippines. He is the founder and President of the Institute for the Studies of Diabetes Inc, the largest institution in the Philippines dedicated to training for Diabetes care. He has delivered numerous lectures and received countless awards. AACE-PC honored him as a Pillar of Diabetes during its First Annual Meeting in Cebu in 2006. On August 19, Dr. Fernando will lecture on Diabetes and the Heart.
